The Death of the High Street

The Death of the High Street is an ongoing project as part of the Urbane Urban? series. Martin has considered how our high streets have changed with the introduction of large supermarkets, out-of-town retail parks and department stores, and the impact this has had.
Inspired by the likes of Lewis Baltz, Edward Burtynsky, Andreas Gursky and Rut Blees Luxemburg, Martin adopted a flaneur approach to wandering his local high streets to capture these images. Using a Mamiya M645 medium format camera, as he feels it suits the flaneur, Martin shows the effect of big business upon our urban environment.
He intends to take the project full-circle by arranging exhibitions of his work in empty shop units, disused business premises and even local transport hubs to capture the interest.
